KAREN PINTO (nee Rose)

Karen Stephanie Pinto (nee Rose)(1969 &endash; 1978) Joan of Arc House

I joined Barnes in 1969 at the age of 8 in Std. 2. Joining boarding school at such a tender age for anyone can be quite traumatic, fortunately I had my older sister, Lorraine who joined school with me. After the initial teething problems of settling into life away from home, I soon got into the humdrum of daily school life and activities. My sister Lorraine excelled in athletics and gymnastics. She was my mentor and my inspiration and used to encourage me to compete. With her encouragement, I did, and became the best gymnast of my time!!! Mr. Mainguy our P.T. teacher at the time needs special mention, without his coaching I would not have been able to achieve my goals!!!

1971 my younger sister Michelle joined us in Barnes followed by my youngest sister Gillian in 1972. My brothers Christopher and Keith followed in 1980 and 1985 respectively. In addition our Mother, Maureen Rose worked in the school as a Matron of Lloyd block from 1980 to 1985. Barnes had its fair share of the Rose family!!! My friends while I was in school were: Lorraine Ryder, Ronda Rennison, Sona Dhir, Lorraine Selvaraj, Susan Bush and Michelle Figueirado. My favourite teachers were Mrs. Gadre and Mts. Withbread. I captianed the girls' school hockey team in 1976 and 1977. Represented Barnes and lead it to victory in fixtures against Christ Church, St Peters and a school from Panchgani I was prefect of Joan of Arc from 1976 &endash; 1977. Tried to follow Erica D'Abreo in her prefecting skills. She was prefect of the Inter dorm while I was there. She was a tough taskmaster and a stickler for tidiness. Today I can boast of having the most tidy home!!! I left Barnes in 1978 and obtained by B.A. from Elphinstone College in Bombay in 1983. I worked in Dubai from 1983 to 1984 where I met my husband-to-be Ivanhoe Pinto. We got married in October 1984 and in three years later were double blessed with a pair of the most beautiful twins &endash; Tanya and Tyronne who were born on the 24th April 1987!!! How did I manage??

"That forsake vain glory, gentle are and kind. Ever strive their best to live." I am presently working as an Executive Administration for the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia in Bombay. My love of my school encourages me to be an active member of the Ex-students Association and a regular visitor to Barnes. May she grow from strength to strength!!
